Character Biography:
History: Sam was born on May 2nd to John and Mary Winchester. He has one sibling, Dean, four years his senior. Exactly six months after Sam’s birthday, a demon named Azazel (often referred to as the Yellow-Eyed Demon) entered his nursery and force-fed him demon blood. In
effort to save her child from whatever the intruder was doing, Mary ran into the room and tried to fight him off. Consequently, she was killed, left stuck to the ceiling with a gaping wound in her stomach, surrounded by flames.

Sam and Dean were raised by their father, who made a life out of hunting supernatural threats, his ultimate goal to find and destroy the demon who killed Mary. By the time he was ten, Sam could successfully handle any variety of weapons and fighting techniques. His father’s ambitions also forced them to move around constantly; Sam and Dean rarely stayed in one school for longer than a month.

Years went by, and Sam made it clear that the “family business” was not the life he wanted. Against his father’s wishes, Sam was enrolled at Stanford University with a goal to become a lawyer. With a flawless GPA and an LSAT score of 174, not to mention a serious girlfriend (Jessica) to whom he’d planned to propose, life seemed to be on exactly the right track for Sam. Then, on the twenty-second anniversary of their mother’s death, Dean showed up at Sam’s school. Dad had gone missing, he told him. He’d gone on a hunting trip weeks ago and had yet to return.

Dean pleaded with Sam to join him in finding their father, and at first, Sam refused. He’d turned his back on that life long ago, and he wasn’t about to go back now. Finally, with Jessica’s encouragement that he needed to make sure his father was alright, Sam agreed to go with Dean—just this once, for the weekend. Then it was back to school in time for his law school interview on Monday. Of course, these things rarely go as planned, and nothing could have prepared Sam for what was to come.

As the brothers teamed up once again to face a ghostly threat, it became clear that they did this job too well together to let it go. Sam, however, still refused. He had the life he wanted now, and nothing was going to change that. Dejected, Dean brought him back to school and said goodbye. It was only moments later that everything changed; Sam entered his room to the horrifying sight of Jessica, dead and bloody on the ceiling in the same manner his mother had been twenty-two years ago.

His world shattered, Sam saw no other choice but to join his brother in the Impala. He would find the creature that murdered his love if it was the last thing he ever did. His new passion was driven not only by vengeance, but by guilt. Sam had a dark secret; for months preceding Jess’s death, he’d been having horrible, vivid dreams which always seemed to come true. A few nights before Dean’s return, Sam had dreamt of Jess’s death, and he had left her alone that weekend anyway.

Now, Sam and Dean travel the country together, hunting down supernatural threats and following wherever the road takes them. It’s a terrifying, tiring, dangerous life. But now more than ever, Sam knows it was the life he was meant to live.

Note: This Sam is taken from the current Supernatural timeline, late season four. Throughout the seasons, the histories and mythologies became more and more complex and detailed, and would take about three pages to explain here. How Others Perceive Your Character: For a long time, Sam might have been perceived as the more soft-hearted of the two brothers, and that probably would have been true. But in light of Dean’s death and the evils he’s faced, Sam was forced to survive on his own, and that meant hardening his shell. Now, there are those who, if seeing him on the job, would call Sam intimidating, maybe even cruel. To his older brother, Sam is still the little brother who needs to be protected, but even he is wary of Sam’s dark side. On the other hand, complete strangers see Sam’s clean-cut appearance and puppy-dog eyes and probably see a well-kept, well-brought up young man who is just a little sad.

Beliefs, Convictions, Morals: Despite all the evil he has seen, Sam always kept his religious faith, admitting that he prayed every day. Which is why he was a little crushed to find out that although angels did in fact exist, they basically saw Sam as the spawn of Satan. Still, Sam believes there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and one day there might be a life better than this. He doesn’t care what the angels say about him or what his supposed destiny is; he will not go dark side, and he will see this fight through to the end. Above all things, Sam has one conviction which stands above all the rest: keep his older brother safe at any and all costs.

Reason(s) for Escaping to Canada: It started out as an ordinary job, maybe a little boring; haunted house in New Jersey, some strange noises at night and even a disappearance or two. It didn’t, however, stay so routine. Sam was in the motel doing research while Dean went out to grab a pizza. Four hours later, he hadn’t returned. Sam talked to everyone he could trying to pick up Dean’s trail, hopping cabs, buses, and trains in whatever direction people claimed to have seen the ’67 Chevy Impala and it’s tall, blue-jeans-clad driver. He was led farther and farther North, and finally, in a motel at the Canadian border, Sam had a dream. There was Dean, and there was the Impala, clear as day; they approached a sign reading “Welcome to Aternaville.” After a quick Mapquesting, Sam was off again to the strange little town, convinced and relieved that he had finally found his brother.
